Gala concert at UNESCO HQ on the occasion of the 70th Anniversary of the Great Victory. International project "Culture Beyond Borders"

"The Allies of the Great Victory. The musical story" International gala concert took place with the support of the Permanent Delegation  of Russia to UNESCO on May 26th in Paris to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the end of World War II (1945).

In the framework of the "Culture Beyond Borders" International Project under the patronate of UNESCO, such world music stars as Mireille Mathieu (France), Allan Harris (USA), Yakov Yavno (USA), Sanya Kroytor (Israel) took part in solemn event. The Russian Federation was represented by the People's Artist of Russia Mikhail Gluz, the Moscow Jazz Orchestra’s conductor and People's Artist of Russia Igor Butman, participant of the TV project "The Voice" (Russia) Polina Zizak and young Russian singer Yaroslava Simonova.

The organizers of the gala concert – Solomon Mikhoels International Cultural Center (Moscow), the International Foundation for Support of Native Culture "Unity" (Moscow).

The director, the artistic director of the project - Merited Artist of Russia Irina Goryunova, the producer - People's Artist of Russia Mikhail Gluz. The Chairman of the Board of Trustees - Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts Andrey Hazin.

The "Culture Beyond Borders" International Project is focused on preservation, protection and development of culture and national arts to promote inter-ethnical spiritual communion, strengthening peace between peoples. The project pays much importance to unity and mutual enrichment of cultures, actively combatting terrorism and chauvinism as the main threats of the twenty-first century.

On behalf of UNESCO Director-General the Assistant of the Director-General for culture Mr Alfredo Pérez de Armiñán followed by the Permanent Delegate of the Russian Federation to UNESCO Ms Eleonora Mitrofanova greeted the guests and participants of the concert. Making the welcoming remarks at the opening ceremony they stressed the importance of the historical significance of the Allied victory over nazism. The activities of the Solomon Mikhoels International Cultural Center were highly appreciated. It was noted that the issues of war and peace, dialogue and mutual understanding today remain more relevant than ever. These unifying humanist values are in the core of UNESCO's mandate.

The performance of the International team of artists was focused heavily on prevention of war, eradicating fascism and terrorism and left deep traces in the hearts of spectators. The musical program was combined with intense artistic and journalistic video production, which included unique archive film footage and photographs of World War II, masterpieces of world cinema of the time.

The concert was followed by a solemn ceremony of "Five Continents" medals and UNESCO diplomas awarded to a group of compatriots "for outstanding contributions to international cultural cooperation and efforts to preserve historical heritage". The nominees have always been contributing to the implementation of the "Culture Beyond Borders" International Project.

In particular the UNESCO prizes were awarded to the Head of the Republic of Bashkortostan (Russia) Mr Rustem Khamitov, People's Artist of Russia Mr Igor Butman, the President of the Russian Chess Federation Mr Andrey Filatov, the Founder and President of "The Cherry Orchard" Festival of the Arts Mr Mikhail Kusnirovich and the Executive Director of the festival Ms Edith Kusnirovich and Doctor of Political Sciences, Corresponding Member of the Academy of Natural Sciences Mr Togrul Bagirov.

On the occasion of the musical evening Mireille Mathieu was solemnly presented a portrait by People's Artist of Russia, Academician of the Russian Academy of Arts Mr Sergey Prisekin.

The gala concert of the Russian and world stars celebrating this important Anniversary has become an important factor in maintaining merited memory of the Great Victory and the decisive role of the Red Army. It made a clear testimony of the historical truth about the heroism of our people, who obtained the victory in a hard struggle, and the role of other nations.

The event at UNESCO was a great success and attracted attention of the French and International audience, living in France fellow citizens from the CIS, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors, the Parisian diplomatic corps, the Secretariat of UNESCO, media and civil society organizations’ representatives and members of the Russian diplomatic missions.
