4 new Russian sites added to UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves


Paris, June, 14th – The International Coordinating Council of the UNESCO Man and Biosphere Programme has added three new sites to the World Biosphere Reserves Network. They are Metsola, Kizlyar Bay and Khakassky biosphere reserves. Moreover the first transboundary biosphere reserve in Pacific region was created on the territory of the Russian Federation and the republic of Kazakhstan and got the name “Great Altay”.


Creation of these biosphere reserves is aimed at promotion of sustainable development as the way to reconcile mindful use of natural resources and conservation of biodiversity.
