St. Petersburg in 2012, will host the 36th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, said the report by the Permanent Mission of the RF to UNESCO.
“Permanent Delegate of the Russian Federation to UNESCO Mrs. Eleonora Mitrofanova was unanimously elected Chairperson of the World Heritage Committee,” said the communique.
A decision on the venue of the 36th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee was taken in Paris during the 35th session.
The World Heritage Committee consists of 21 States (including Russia) being members of the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage adopted in 1972.
The Convention is one of the most effective international legal instruments of UNESCO and at present brings together 187 countries. Sessions of the Committee approve applications for inclusion of new nominations for the World Heritage List (now 936 sites are on the list), consider reports by the Members on cultural and natural sites’ safe state, as well as other issues related to the Convention implementation.
As to the Russian Federation, this watch list includes 24 sites of cultural and natural heritage.
