Deputy Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Mr Gennady Gatilov Meets with UNESCO Director-General Ms Irina Bokova

On May, 18 the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation Mr Gennady Gatilov had a meeting with UNESCO Director-General Ms Irina Bokova within the framework of the 186th session of the UNESCO Executive Board in Paris.

During their talk the questions of cooperation between Russia and the international humanitarian organization as well as the prospective projects in key areas of its mandate were discussed. Mr G.Gatilov and Ms I.Bokova devoted special attention to enhancing the role of UNESCO in international affairs, strengthening inter agency cooperation and expanding other forms of partnership. They noted the importance of finalizing the draft of UNESCO Program and Budget for 2012-2013, and the focus on achieving concrete results, particularly in the context of the reform process in Organisation’s activities and of structural changes in its field network.

Ms I.Bokova positively responded to the Russian Federation's decision to nominate St.-Petersburg as the venue for the 36th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in 2012. She also expressed her willingness to provide the capacity and expertise of the Organization in the context of preparations for the holding the major international sport events such as in particular the Kazan 2013 Summer Universiade and the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia. In this regard UNESCO could act as a flagship for advocating healthy lifestyles among young people, promoting cultural diversity and combating the spread of doping in sport.

UNESCO Director-General highly appreciated Russia's chairmanship in the Executive Board, and noted particularly the professional organization and governance of the current session of UNESCO Executive Board.
