On the 9-th extraordinary session of the World Heritage Committee


On 14 June the 9th extraordinary session of the World Heritage Committee took place at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. At the session the Russian Federation was unanimously elected in the Panel of the Committee to hold a post of Vice-Chairman of the WHC. 21 member-states of the Committee, including Russia, examined preparation for the 34th session of the WHC that will take place on 25 July-3d August in the capital of Brazil. The participants adopted an agenda of the forthcoming session. According to the agenda, the Committee is to examine 147 reports on conservation of the World Heritage properties, 41 nominations to the World Heritage List and a number of other questions concerning implementation of the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage. Before the beginning of the session, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Culture Francesco Bandarin highly appreciated the support of the Russian President Dmitry Medvedev given to the decisions of the Committee of World Heritage to preserve the historical center of St. Petersburg, the site of the world culture heritage under UNESCO protection.
