36th Session of the General Conference of UNESCO Election of H. E. Katalin Bogyay Permanent Delegate of the Republic of Hungary to the Office of the President of the 36th Session of the General Conference

Your Excellency Mr Pal Schmitt, President of the Republic of Hungary, Distinguished Delegates, Ladies and gentlemen,

It’s a great pleasure to me to express on behalf of Members of the Executive Board and on my own our heartfelt congratulations to Her Excellency Ms Katalin Bogyay, Permanent Delegate of Hungary, on her election as the President of the 36th Session of the General Conference.

Dear Katalin, I know you as an admirable ambassador of your country and as a friend. Since you came to UNESCO, you proved yourself as a person who knows all its problems and intricacies. This was fully recognised first by the Member States of your regional group when you were elected to its chairmanship.

And now your professional path, competence and gained credibility grant you an international credit in the office of the President of the 36th session of the General Conference. Your election is naturally to be considered an act of acknowledgement by UNESCO Member States of the indisputable contribution that your country – Hungary – has made to the various activities of UNESCO since it joined the Organization in 1948.

Madam President, I am sure that your organizational skills and international experience will reinforce the cooperation of the three UNESCO organs. The work of the Executive Board will benefit considerably from the specific initiatives you will propose to move forwards within UNESCO’s fields of competence.

I am certain, as is the case of all of us, that under your leadership the 36th session of the General Conference will be successfully carried out, and that all of the necessary and important decisions will be duly taken. It also concerns further preparations for the next 37th session, the significance of which we already can see, since it will define UNESCO's programming transition to a new C/4 and C/5 cycle.

Dear Katalin, I wish you every success and great cooperation for the coming years. I wish that your wisdom and adherence to the ideals of UNESCO will support and reinforce your action in taking up the challenges ahead.
