His Excellency Mr Roustem Khamitov, President of the Republic of Bashkortostan,

Excellency Ambassador Eleonora Mitrofanova, Permanent Delegate of the Russian Federation to UNESCO,

Excellencies, Ladies and Gentleman,

I am delighted to open this exhibition, Ural-Batyr Land, dedicated to 15years of cooperation between the Republic of Bashkortostan and UNESCO.

Our partnership builds on a shared vision of the importance of quality learning, of harnessing the power of the sciences, of safeguarding and promoting cultural heritage and the diversity of cultural expressions.

Fundamentally, this is a shared vision of humanity, as a single community, brought together by human rights and dignity.

This exhibition showcases unique features of the Republic of Bashkortostan, a ‘pearl of Russia’ – its creative capital, Ufa, its cultural heritage, the importance of sports and the beauty of its nature.

We have here a harmonious blend of culture and nature, of innovation and tradition.

For this, I wish to thank the President of the Republic of Bashkortostan. I am grateful for his presence at UNESCO today, and, most especially, for his leadership in taking forward UNESCO’s values.

I thank the Delegation of the Russian Federation for this initiative, and for its commitment to promoting the great diversity of its cultural heritage.

This exhibition is an invitation to discover the Ural-Batyr complex, for instance, including the Shulgan-Tash cave-painting -- to discover also the Ural-Batyr folk epos, an ancient masterpiece.

These are unique features of Bashkortostan, expressions of the experience and wealth of this land and its people -- they are also part of the wider story of humanity, chapters in the story we all share.

All of this speaks to the strength of Bashkortostan and its society as part of the Russian Federation.

The great Bashkir poet Mustai Karim put it this way,

Я говорюсвободен и силен;

I am not a Russian, but I am a citizen of Russia,

I speak, I’m free and I’m strong.

I have grown up like an oak on the hill

Absorbing the waters of Russian rivers.
