On the initiative of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and the Permanent Delegation of the Russian Federation to UNESCO a solemn presentation on the occasion of the 25th Anniversary of the inscriptions of the first Russian properties on the UNESCO World Heritage List was held on July 3 in Bonn during the 39th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee.
UNESCO has recognized in 1990 most significant Russian sites such as “Kremlin and Red Square, Moscow", "Historic Centre of Saint Petersburg and Related Groups of Monuments" and "Kizhi Pogost" as monuments of outstanding universal value.
The event in Bonn was chaired by Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of the Russian Federation to UNESCO, Chairperson of the 36th session of the World Heritage Committee (Saint-Petersburg, 2012) H.E. Ms Eleonora Mitrofanova. In her speech, she mentioned the important contribution of the Soviet experts who conducted a deep research and did the great preparation work together with UNESCO despite the radical restructuring of the internal control system, leading further to the disintegration of the Soviet Union. They opened a new page of the active participation of our country in the activities to protect the World Heritage, as well as to emphasize the worldwide importance of Russian monuments and to secure rigorous preservation of our properties in cooperation with international experts.
The special significance of the event was stressed by the fact that the meeting has been organized on the jubilee celebrations’ year of the major world historical anniversaries like the 70th Anniversary of the Great Victory over fascism and UNESCO's 70th Anniversary. Moreover, this year marks the 15th Anniversary of the inscription of the Kazan Kremlin on the World Heritage List, 20 years since the inscription of the Virgin Komi Forests, 15 – of the Ferapontov Monastery and the Curonian Spit, 10 years – of the Yaroslavl city and the Struve Geodetic Arc and 5 years –of the Putorana Plateau respectively.
During the presentation the following members of the representative Russian delegation took the floor: Mr Vladimir Tsvetnov, Director of the Department for State Protection of the Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, Mr Serguei Makarov, Head of the State Committee for Control, Use and Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments of Saint-Petersburg Administration, Ms Olga Titova, Deputy Director of the Kizhi Museum, Ms Tatiana Krasheninnikova, Head of Monuments Protection Department of the Moscow Kremlin Museums.
A special video, created especially to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of UNESCO's classification of the abovementioned Russian monuments, was displayed to the guests of the Russian presentation.
The event aroused great interest among the Member States and the Secretariat of UNESCO. Representatives from the approximately 40 countries attended the event including Mr Alfredo Pérez de Armiñán, Assistant Director-General of UNESCO for Culture, Mr Kishore Rao, Director of UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre, Mr Stefano De Caro, Director-General of ICCROM, and one of the leading international experts in archeology and restoration Mr Mounir Bushenaki.
According to the reviews, the Russian event was organized at the highest informational and technological level and was of great interest to the international experts and all the participants of the session.
