UNESCO hosted an International humanitarian action "Mission of Peace and Friendship", dedicated to the 70th Anniversary of the World War II Victory and the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers (celebrated on 29 May) on June 5.
Over 30 leaders of Non-Governmental Organizations and the Reserve Officers Association of veterans of peacekeeping operations from around the world attended the event which was initiated by the International Advisory Committee of the Organization of reserve officers and reserve (IAC), Soldiers of Peace International Association (SPIA/AISP) with the support of UNESCO and the assistance of the Permanent Mission of the Russian Federation to the Organization.
Asssistant Director-General of UNESCO for social and human sciences Ms Nada Al-Nashif, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of the Russian Federation to UNESCO Ms Eleonora Mitrofanova, IAC President Mr Alexander Kanshin, IAC Secretary General Mr Anatoly Kumakhov, SPIA President Mr Laurent Attar-Bayrou and representatives of other veterans' organizations addressed the participants of the forum.
Following the meeting the Joint "Peace Charter" was adopted by the participants on behalf of the IAC and the SPIA. The outcome document urges all veterans' organizations to strengthen cooperation and to use their experience and capabilities to ensure peace and security, to prevent conflicts and to effectively respond to the threats of terrorism and extremism, which are transnational in nature.
After the forum, a solemn wreath-laying ceremony was held at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier beneath the Arc de Triomphe de l'Étoile in Paris.
